Michael wasn’t sure how long he had been in his half asleep state. Beth hadn’t returned and he felt his tongue sticking to an acidic paste on the top of his mouth. He rolled off the stretcher and crawled across the hut to a box of water bottles. The first sip provided some relief in lubricating his mouth but the taste, although diluted, remained.

He eased himself to his feet, bracing against a wall while his balance regathered. Pulling a blanket from the stretcher, he wrapped it around his shoulders. Stooping low to walk under the doorway, he shuffled into the cool of the evening. The group by the fire didn’t appear to notice him and the soft sound of their chatter merged with the crackle of the fire and movement of the forest.
